Henk Smith on 10 years of MarineMasters
From the very beginning it felt right, because we saw a clear gap in the market. Clients needed good people, creative solutions and cost-efficient execution. That combination became the foundation of MarineMasters, and it remains at the heart of the company today.
In the early years, it came down to one simple mindset: do it, make it work, and earn trust. People had to believe in us, and we had to prove that their trust was well placed.
Looking back after 10 years, three themes stand out in Henk’s view of Marine Masters:persistency, creativity, and cooperation.
Persistency
The early years were all about showing up. Knocking on doors, following up, staying close to opportunities, and continuing until a client gave us the green light.
Marine Masters was built as an alternative in the market. We did not own assets, but we were still able to mobilize assets, equipment, and personnel quickly. We were willing to work with others, build strong teams, and develop plans that fit both the situation and the budget. In a market where the default solution can sometimes be expensive, slow, or difficult to collaborate with, we kept looking for clients who valued a different approach.
That persistency remains just as relevant today. Our ambition is to become the first choice more often. We believe that is achieved by delivering results, building trust, and staying visible.
Creativity
MarineMasters is built around one question: how can it be done?
In our work, creativity is not about improvisation. It is about staying practical under pressure and within constraints. It means finding solutions that keep people safe, prevent further
damage, and still get the job done.
That mindset also means being willing to step forward when others step back, but only when the work can be done responsibly. Henk’s view is clear: you do not simply leave a ship behind. You look for a way to bring it back to the owner safely. That requires creativity, but
also discipline, structure, and clear safety limits.
Cooperation
Marine Masters has never been a solo effort. The work depends on people, trust, and partnerships.
From day one, the company has worked closely with trusted specialists such as Jan Kalkman and Erik Houteman. They are still involved today and continue to deliver strong results.
Over time, Marine Masters has also built a solid network of contractors. That network allows us to mobilize the right expertise quickly, combine disciplines, and execute projects with clear roles and shared standards.
What changed, and what stayed the same
In the beginning, Marine Masters carried out consultancy assignments for insurers, other salvors, and companies. That work helped us build experience, credibility, and confidence in the market.
Over time, the focus shifted towards taking more responsibility and delivering complete projects. MS Amlin and Nu Shi Nalini were early examples of salvage projects that went smoothly and helped strengthen the company’s track record.
In 2022, Danny became fully involved in the business and the ambition grew further. Marine Masters expanded its focus into oil and gas, decommissioning, and T&I work. This brought different working methods and experiences. The company broadened its scope, but the core remained the same: good people, a practical plan, and clean execution.
Looking ahead
Marine Masters will continue to take on both small and large projects. We will work as a subcontractor when that is the best route, and we will take the lead when the situation and circumstances allow it.
Our ambition is to become the first choice more often by continuing to deliver and by staying true to the mindset that built the company in the first place: persistency, creativity, and cooperation.
